Featuring a distinctive Proof finish, the coin stands out for its mirror-like background and frosted relief elements, which beautifully highlight the symbolism of the Year of the Snake.

The History of the Australian Lunar Series

Established in 1899 in Western Australia, The Perth Mint is one of the world's most respected precious metal refiners and producers of investment and commemorative coins.

The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Lunar Coin Series in 1996. Since then, it has become one of the most internationally recognised precious metal coin collections inspired by the Chinese lunar calendar.

Each 12-year cycle features the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Launched in 2020, the Australian Lunar Series III continues this tradition with new artistic designs, combining The Perth Mint's exceptional quality standards with the rich symbolism of Eastern culture.

The Year of the Snake coin is the sixth release in the Lunar Series III collection.

The Meaning and Symbolism of the Year of the Snake

In Chinese astrology, the Snake symbolises wisdom, intelligence, intuition, patience and inner strength. People born in the Year of the Snake are often considered observant, analytical and determined.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake, which began on 29 January 2025 and ended on 16 February 2026.

The Wood element adds the qualities of growth, creativity and adaptability to the traditional characteristics associated with the Snake. As a result, the Year of the Wood Snake is linked to thoughtful decision-making, personal development and the achievement of long-term goals.

Coin Design

Reverse – Year of the Snake Design

The reverse of the coin features an elegant, coiled snake set against a natural landscape. The intricately detailed scales and raised head give the composition a lifelike and powerful appearance.

The background features scenic landscapes and overhanging branches, emphasising harmony with nature and creating a peaceful, balanced atmosphere.

The reverse also includes the Chinese character "蛇", meaning Snake, the English inscription "SNAKE", the year of issue "2025", and The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark.

Obverse – Portrait of King Charles III

The obverse features a portrait of King Charles III, created by artist Dan Thorne.

The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions "CHARLES III" and "AUSTRALIA", together with the coin's weight, silver purity and face value.

Proof Quality – Exceptional Finish

Unlike standard silver bullion coins intended primarily for investment, this coin has been produced using the Proof minting technique.

Proof coins are struck using specially prepared coin blanks and polished dies to achieve exceptional precision and a striking contrast between design elements.

The coin's mirror-like background and frosted relief create a distinctive visual contrast, highlighting the snake's scales, natural motifs and even the finest details of the design.

This exceptional finish makes the coin particularly attractive to numismatists and collectors. The coin has a limited mintage of just 5,000 pieces worldwide.

Silver Investment and Collecting
