1/2 oz Australian Lunar Series III – Year of the Rabbit Gold Coin | 2023

The 2023 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Rabbit 1/2 oz Gold Coin, produced by the world-renowned The Perth Mint, celebrates the fourth animal of the Chinese zodiac. Struck from 99.99% pure gold, this beautifully crafted coin combines the enduring value of precious metal with the rich cultural heritage and symbolism of the Chinese lunar calendar.

The History of the Australian Lunar Series

The Perth Mint, established in 1899 in Western Australia, is one of the world's most respected precious metal refiners and coin producers. Its Australian Lunar Coin Series was first introduced in 1996 and has since become one of the most recognised collections among precious metal investors and coin collectors worldwide.

Inspired by the ancient Chinese lunar calendar, each 12-year series features the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

The third series began in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse, making the 2023 Year of the Rabbit its fourth annual release.

The Year of the Rabbit – Symbolism and Tradition

According to Chinese mythology, the order of the twelve zodiac animals was determined by a legendary competition known as the Great Race. The Rabbit secured fourth place, becoming an important symbol in the Chinese lunar calendar.

In Chinese tradition, the Rabbit represents intelligence, creativity, vigilance, compassion and good fortune. People born in the Year of the Rabbit, including 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023, are traditionally associated with these qualities.

The Rabbit is also regarded as a symbol of peace, elegance and prosperity, making this gold coin a meaningful gift as well as an attractive addition to a precious metal collection.

Coin Design

Reverse – The Year of the Rabbit

The reverse features an elegant depiction of a rabbit leaping energetically through grasses with delicate, feathery plumes. The design captures the animal's agility and grace while reflecting the natural beauty and artistic traditions associated with the Chinese zodiac.

Created by Ing Ing Jong, a talented designer at The Perth Mint, the artwork also includes the Chinese character for Rabbit (兔), the inscription "RABBIT 2023", and The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mintmark.

Obverse – Queen Elizabeth II

The obverse features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by renowned British coin artist Jody Clark.

Surrounding the portrait are the coin's monetary denomination, weight and gold purity. As a 2023 issue featuring Queen Elizabeth II, the coin also represents a notable period in modern Australian numismatic history.

Gold Purity and Investment Appeal

The coin contains 1/2 oz of 99.99% pure gold (999.9 fineness) and is issued as official Australian legal tender with a face value of 50 Australian dollars.

Combining The Perth Mint's internationally recognised craftsmanship with the enduring popularity of the Lunar Series, this coin appeals to both investors seeking physical gold and collectors interested in beautifully designed annual releases.

Its detailed artwork, cultural significance and high gold purity make the 2023 Year of the Rabbit Gold Coin a distinctive addition to any investment portfolio or coin collection.
